Phoenix, Las Vegas bake in scorching heat

PHOENIX (AP) ? A blazing heat wave expected to send the mercury soaring to nearly 120 degrees in Phoenix and Las Vegas over the weekend settled across the West on Friday, threatening to ground airliners and raising fears that pets will get burned on the scalding pavement.

The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Zookeepers in Phoenix hosed down the elephants and fed tigers frozen fish snacks. And tourists at California's Death Valley took photos of the harsh landscape and a thermometer that read 121.

The mercury there was expected to reach nearly 130 through the weekend ? just short of the 134-degree reading from a century ago that stands as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

"You have to take a picture of something like this. Otherwise no one will believe you," said Laura McAlpine, visiting Death Valley from Scotland on Friday.

The heat is not expected to break until Monday or Tuesday.

The scorching weather presented problems for airlines because high temperatures can make it more difficult for planes to take off. Hot air reduces lift and also can diminish engine performance. Planes taking off in the heat may need longer runways or may have to shed weight by carrying less fuel or cargo.

Smaller jets and propeller planes are more likely to be affected than bigger airliners that are better equipped for extreme temperatures.

However, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport officials reported no such heat-related problems with any flights by Friday evening.

The National Weather Service said Phoenix reached 116 on Friday, two degrees short of the expected high, in part because of a light layer of smoke from wildfires in neighboring New Mexico that shielded the blazing sun. Las Vegas still was expecting near record highs over the weekend approaching 116 degrees while Phoenix was forecast to hit nearly 120. The record in Phoenix is 122.

Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho, with triple-digit heat forecast for the Boise area. Cities in Washington state that are better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s next week.

"This is the hottest time of the year, but the temperatures that we'll be looking at for Friday through Sunday, they'll be toward the top," said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark O'Malley. "It's going to be baking hot across much of the entire West."

The heat is the result of a high-pressure system brought on by a shift in the jet stream, the high-altitude air current that dictates weather patterns. The jet stream has been more erratic in the past few years.

Health officials warned people to be extremely careful when venturing outdoors. The risks include not only dehydration and heat stroke but burns from the concrete and asphalt. Dogs can suffer burns and blisters on their paws by walking on scorching pavement.

"You will see people who go out walking with their dog at noon or in the middle of the day and don't bring enough water and it gets tragic pretty quickly," said Bretta Nelson, spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society. "You just don't want to find out the hard way."

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless as well as elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.

Officials said personnel were added to the Border Patrol search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the brutal desert heat.

In June 1990, when Phoenix hit 122 degrees, airlines were forced to cease flights for several hours because of a lack of data from the manufacturers on how the aircraft would operate in such extreme heat.

US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher said the airline now knows that its Boeings can fly at up to 126 degrees, and its Airbus fleet can operate at up to 127.

While the heat in Las Vegas is expected to peak on Sunday, it's unlikely to sideline the first round of the four-week Bikini Invitational tournament.

"I feel sorry for those poor girls having to strut themselves in 115 degrees, but there's $100,000 up for grabs," said Hard Rock casino spokeswoman Abigail Miller. "I think the girls are willing to make the sacrifice."

Pacifica shark attacks kayak. Man inside escapes unharmed.

Pacifica shark attacks a man's kayak in waters just south of San Francisco Tuesday. The kayaker was able to escape and returned to shore without injury, according to Pacifica police.?Most?shark?attacks off California shores occur between July and November, when the predators are drawn by seals and sea lions.

Pacifica?police Capt. Joe Spanheimer says the man was fishing from a kayak shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday offPacifica?State Beach.

Spanheimer tells the San Francisco Chronicle (bit.ly/15DZuYc) that an unknown species of?shark?swam up to the fisherman, bit his kayak then briefly circled around it before swimming away. The kayaker returned to shore without injury.

Police say swimmers and surfers rarely go to the area where the incident occurred, but signs would be posted on the beach warning people about the?shark?run-in.

Most?shark?attacks off California shores occur between July and November, when the predators are drawn by seals and sea lions.

After being ousted as CEO of Dow Jones & Company and publisher of The Wall Street Journal,?Les Hinton must have had trouble filling his days. Associated for over a century with Rupert Murdoch?s publishing empire??I vividly recall an enthusiastic young man in the offices of my first newspaper in Adelaide, where Les joined the company as a 15-year-old and had the rather unenviable task of buying me sandwiches for lunch,? Mr. Murdoch wrote upon Mr. Hinton?s News of the World-linked?departure.

For years he was one of Rupert Murdoch?s closest confidantes. His ?London hit man,? he survived the first few years of the?News of the World phone hacking scandal, before finally being thrown overboard in 2011 as the scandal reached a fever pitch and eventually took down the paper itself. (Though Mr. Hinton can consider himself lucky that, unlike News of the World editors?Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks, he was never arrested in connection with the contretemps.)

Mr. Hinton is still, as far as we can tell, unemployed (though certainly not untweeted), but at least he?ll be able to kill some time redecorating his new apartment: he picked up a third-floor unit at?870 Fifth Avenue, according to city records.

?Oblique Central Park views,? indeed.

Fitting for someone who seems to be out of work, the co-op, listed by?DG Neary Realty?s?Abraham Hochzeit, is one of the plainer abodes on that storied avenue. With ?oblique Central Park Views,? a dining room that recalls the size and shape of a submarine and a listing that invites would-be buyers to ?experience the benefits of a low floor? (higher chance of surviving defenestration? great for when the elevator breaks down), the two-bedroom previously owned by Miriam Holmes?fetched only a hair under?$2 million, down from a $2.4 million asking price when it first went on the market last year.

Mr. Hinton?s lists his current address as the Upper East Side townhouse that he shares with longtime partner and new wife Kath Raymond Hinton (Piers Morgan, Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson?the latter two also taken down by the News of the World scandal?were reportedly in attendance), who was not listed on the deed.

Ms. Raymond Hinton was formerly an aide to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and was only persuaded to give up her 10 Downing Street gig and hop across the pond after some ?internal domestic discussion? with her husband. We hope she likes post-war beige brick.

Ever since we moved into our new home, the husband and I have been working diligently on making all parts of our home us. Our home has really good bones: great flooring, neutral wall colors, crown molding and wainscoting in various rooms throughout our home. All stuff that is fabulous, but it could be in any person?s home. It just needed touches here and there to make sure it looks like our family is the one living there now. So far, Luke and Reagan?s rooms have been tackled, we?ve created a gallery wall with some personalized art, made over some old not-so-cute art, and put together a place perfect for displaying all of our kids? masterpieces. Now that almost every other room in our home has had some new love infused into it, it?s time to focus on my favorite space in our home: my craft room. I?m sharing the first project I put together for the craft space: a Family Photo Flip Book!

I?ve added a piece of art that is really me but it showcases the the thing I love most: my family. Want to take a peek at each of the pages?

Let me start by saying this: I?m not going to tell you step-by-step how to re-create this sweet piece of home decor, BUT I am showing you each page and trying to list as many of the supplies that I used so you have a great jumping off point for when you create your own. Sound good?

The base of the entire flip book is this amazing mini clipboard album. Swoon. I simply built everything off of the pages that were already included with it. Because the clipboard opens, you could easily add more pages if that?s your style.

Brother TD-4000

The Brother TD-4000 is a distant cousin to the Editors' Choice Brother QL-700. Both are label printers, and both come with the same label-printing program. But where the QL-700 is strong on versatility, with a wide range of label types and even the ability to print stamps, the TD-4000's strengths are its speed and its ability to print labels up to four inches wide. That makes it a heavier duty printer than most people need, but if you print a lot of labels, or print labels as large as 4 by 36 inches, it may be just right.

With its ability to handle four-inch-wide rolls, the TD-4000 is necessarily wider than typical office label printers like the QL-700, with its maximum 2.4-inch label width. However, it's not much bigger otherwise, at 6.2 by 6.8 by 9.0 inches (HWD). In fact, it has a smaller footprint than the Editors' Choice Dymo LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo, which is basically two printers in one case. It's certainly small enough to fit on a desk without taking up a lot of space.

Limited Choice of Label Types, but Easy to Switch
Among the key features the TD-4000 shares with the QL-700 are an automatic cutter and the ability to switch label rolls easily. Most label printers offer a variety of label types and sizes, but swapping out the rolls is just hard enough to discourage switching labels very often.

The Dymo LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo offers one solution to that problem, at least for people who use only two label types. By combining two printers in one case, it lets you load two rolls of labels and switch between them as needed. Brother label printers, including the TD-4000, offer a second-best solution, by making it easy enough to switch rolls so it's not much of an issue unless you need to switch several times a day. I timed the switch, without rushing, at about 30 seconds.

Unfortunately, there aren't all that many types of rolls to switch to with the TD-4000. According to Brother, the printer can work with thermal paper rolls from other manufacturers, but Brother itself offers only one color?white?in a choice of five sizes, 2 by 1 inches, 3 by 1 inches, 4 by 1.97 inches, 4 by 6 inches, and a 4-inch-wide continuous format.

Street prices for the rolls range from $144 to $225 for boxes of 12 rolls, with 3,372 to 18,528 labels per box, depending on label size. That works out to about 1 cent per label for the 2 by 1 and 3 by 1 labels, 2.2 cents for the 4 by 1 labels, and 4.3 cents for the 4 by 6 labels. The continuous roll comes out to 12.9 cents per foot.

Setup and Software
Setting up the TD-4000 is standard for a label printer. For my tests, using a Windows Vista system, I connected by USB cable, although the printer also offers an RS-232 serial port for those who need one. The installation routine puts on your hard drive both Brother's P-touch Editor version 5 label printing software and a printer driver that lets you print directly from standard application programs like Microsoft Word or Excel.

The software also offers some useful tricks, including the option to install P-touch shortcuts in the Word, Excel, and Outlook toolbars or Ribbons (depending on the Microsoft Office version). The shortcuts let you send text to P-touch Editor to print as labels, which is particularly useful for printing labels from a list, including, for example, turning some or all of your Outlook contacts into mailing-list labels.

One minor issue is that although the printer can recover from errors gracefully, the manual doesn't explain how. The trick is to tap on the power button without holding it for long enough to turn the printer off, then choose the Trashcan button in the popup that shows on your computer screen to delete the print job from the print queue.

Also note, more as a disappointment than a problem, that if you use the cloud-based options for FedEx or UPS, there's no easy way to print labels for either. However, Brother says that UPS's downloadable program for Windows, UPS WorldShip, will let you print UPS labels on the printer without problems.

Speed
Largely making up for the minor issues I ran into is that the TD-4000 is impressively fast. Brother rates the printer at 4.3 inches per second (ips). The actual time will be a little slower, because of the time between giving a print command and the printer starting to print. However the more labels you print at a time, the closer the total time will be to the claimed speed.

I timed a single one-inch address label with three lines plus a Postnet bar code at 3.2 seconds, 50 labels at 18.5 seconds, and 100 labels at 34.0 seconds. After adding the extra eighth of an inch between labels, that works out to 3.04 ips for 50 labels and 3.3 ips for 100 labels. As a point of comparison, the QL-700, which is fast for its price class, managed 83.3 address labels per minute (lpm) on our tests. On the 100-label test, the TD-4000 was more than twice as fast, with the 100 labels in 34 seconds translating to a rate of 176.5 lpm.

Given its price and speed, the Brother TD-4000 would be overkill for most offices. If you just want a label printer on your desk for printing a few labels a day, a printer like the Brother QL-700 or Dymo LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo will be a far better fit. But if you need to print lots of labels at once on a regular basis for mailing lists or the like, need to print labels at up to four inches wide, or both, the Brother TD-4000 offers the kind of speed and capability that can handle the job. For that level of heavy-duty label printing, it may well be your first choice.

Tenet Healthcare buying Vanguard Health for $1.8B

DALLAS (AP) ? Tenet Healthcare Corp. is buying Vanguard Health Systems Inc. for about $1.8 billion, helping to expand its service offerings and broaden its geographic reach.

Tenet will pay $21 per share, a 70 percent premium to Vanguard Health's Friday closing price of $12.37.

Shares of Vanguard Health soared $8.14, or 65.8 percent, to $20.51 in premarket trading Monday.

The companies said Monday that the transaction also includes $2.5 billion in debt and value the entire deal at $4.3 billion.

Following the acquisition, Tenet will own 79 hospitals and 157 outpatient facilities. It currently has 49 hospitals and 126 outpatient facilities.

Both boards unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to close before year's end

Tenet expects annual savings of $100 million to $200 million and for the acquisition to add to earnings in the first year.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health said that its founder, Chairman and CEO Charlie Martin, will join Tenet's board. Vanguard's vice chairman, Keith Pitts, will continue in that position at Tenet.

Dallas-based Tenet has secured fully committed financing for the transaction from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
