Reworked 'Shrek' showcases fine comic performances at the Coterie ...

Not that we need additional evidence, but anyone who doubts the quality of musical-theater talent in Kansas City should check out ?Shrek the Musical? at the Coterie.

The show, which opened on Broadway in 2008, is based on the Dreamworks animated film about an ogre and a princess who find true love. The stage version was created by playwright David Lindsay-Abaire and composer Jeanine Tesori. Jeff Church, the Coterie?s artistic director, does something he?s done before: Edited, abbreviated and rearranged the material with the creators? participation as a one-act musical that can be performed for young audiences. We should tip our hat to Church for snagging the performance rights. It?s unusual for a regional theater to stage a show that is still touring. This abridgement keeps the most salient qualities of the original: a goofy sense of humor, characters with heart and an irresistible message. That message, delivered sweetly and convincingly, argues that all of us, no matter how strange we may be, deserve a shot at happiness. When the company sings ?Freak Flag,? an anthem that promotes the notion that oddballs and weirdos should come out of the closet, the natural urge is to sing along. If you?re a freak, that is. Ample humor is provided by the principal players but much of the show?s comedic success is attributable directly to costume designer Georgianna Buchanan, who outdoes herself yet again. The outfit for sawed-off Lord Farquad is worth the price of admission alone. The production showcases some formidable musical-theater actors ? some of the best in the city, in fact. Tim Scott taps into his innate weirdness and expert comic timing as Lord Farquad and a couple of other characters. Dana Joel Nicholson plays the title character, a green ogre with a Scottish accent, with considerable charm and deadpan humor. Tosin Morohunfola, who seems to always bring something extra to any role he performs, threatens to steal the show as Donkey.Lauren Braton reveals herself to be an instinctive comic actress in addition to being an exceptional singer. I?ve never seen Braton in a role that required as much broad, low-brow humor as Princess Fiona, but Braton delivers the goods with gusto. The songs are performed live to backing tracks arranged and recorded by music director Anthony Edwards. Jeremy Watson, who served as associate musical director, helped out on the vocal arrangements. As I?ve noticed in other shows using pre-recorded tracks, there are moments when the music threatens to drown out the actors and others when it isn?t loud enough. The Coterie?s performance space, as usual, presents big challenges to anyone staging a show there but Church uses the space as effectively as possible. Nice supporting performances are registered by Tyler Eisenreich as Pinocchio and Enjoli Gavin as the Dragon, while Steven Eubank does amusing quadruple duty as the Wolf and several other characters. Eric Ranay Rush appears as the Wicked Witch but also handles the funniest bits in show ? first as the voice of the dismembered Ginger Bread Man and as an exploding songbird (represented by a hand puppet). Marc Wayne provides some inventive choreography. The set design by Erin Walley suggests a child?s drawing, Art Kent?s lighting makes a big contribution and Alex Espy?s prop designs are quite amusing. The cast also includes 12 kids who alternate in groups of six. They are essentially ensemble performers who play small background roles. The performers at the opening Friday night contributed energy and obvious talent.

Eye on the Economy: Robust Improvement for Housing is Lifting ...

*Eye on the Economy is an NAHB newsletter that is published every two weeks and takes a larger view of recent economic and housing policy news.

How times have changed.

With data in from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), it is becoming clear that home building is a leading source of economic growth for 2012.

According to the BEA, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased at a 2% annualized rate during the third quarter. This was an improvement, albeit a small one, from the 1.3% rate of growth during the second quarter and matches the 2% rate for the start of 2012. GDP growth has only exceeded 2.6% for one quarter (the final quarter of 2011) since the start of 2010.

As the overall economy has slowed, housing has generated an outsized share of the expansion. Home building and remodeling (residential fixed investment or RFI) added 0.33 percentage points to the final tally of GDP growth, or 17% of the total. In the second quarter, RFI yielded 15% of net growth and 22% in the first quarter of 2011.

These numbers are impressive considering that RFI remains only 2.5% of GDP as of the third quarter and housing starts remain half the size of a normal, healthy market.

Of the three primary elements of the housing sector (new home construction, remodeling and existing home sales), new home sales continue to experience the largest gains, increasing in September? 5.7% to an annual rate of 389,000, the highest level since the home buyer tax credit expired in early 2010. The three-month moving average of new home sales has increased steadily for more than a year as more housing markets begin to see rising home prices and improving consumer sentiment.

The supply of new homes for sale fell to a seven-year low of 4.5 months as the pace of sales picked up, but the inventory advanced by only 2,000. The number of completed homes for sale ready for immediate move-in remains at a record low of 38,000 as builders remain cautious about building ahead of the market and as credit access remains tight.

In the remodeling sector, recent indicators suggest expansion after two years of moving sideways. For example, the NAHB Remodeling Market Index (RMI) climbed to 50 in the third quarter of 2012, up from 45 in the previous quarter. At 50, the RMI is at its highest point since the third quarter of 2005.

In the third quarter of 2012, the major RMI component on current market conditions rose from 46 to 52, while the future indicators component increased from 44 to 49. Each of the major RMI components is now higher than it has been at any time over the past six years.

The RMI reading for current remodeling activity was particularly strong in owner-occupied housing during the third quarter. The subcomponents of the current conditions index for owner-occupied housing were all well over 50, ranging between 55 and 60.

Existing homes sales, as reported by the National Association of Realtors (NAR), decreased 1.7% in September month over month, but are up 11% from the same period a year ago. NAR reported that September? total existing home sales were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 4.75 million units combined for single-family homes, townhouses, condominiums and co-ops. That compares to an upwardly revised 4.83 million units in August and 4.28 million units during the same period a year ago.

The total existing housing inventory at the end of September decreased 3.3% from the previous month to 2.32 million homes for sale. At the current sales rate, the September inventory represents a 5.9-month ?supply, down from a revised 6-month supply in August and much improved from the 8.1-month supply of homes a year ago.

NAR reported 24% of September? sales were foreclosures and short sales sold at deep discounts. This level was up from 22% in August, and down from 30% a year ago. In September 2012, all cash sales increased to 28%. Investors accounted for 18% of home sales, and first-time buyers accounted for 32% of sales, according to NAR.

Despite the September decline, there was good news for future existing home sales. The NAR Pending Home Sales Index (PHSI), a forward-looking indicator based on signed contracts, increased 0.3% in September? to 99.5, up from 99.2 in August. The September? PHSI?was 14.5% higher than the same period a year ago. Year over year, the PHSI has increased for 17 straight months.

Further, there was more good news for housing prices. August data from the Federal Housing Finance Agency indicate house prices increased nationally 0.7% from July levels on a seasonally adjusted basis. This brings the cumulative gain for 2012 to 4.6% after being essentially flat through 2011.

All nine Census divisions followed the national pattern with a relatively flat performance in 2011, but the year-to-date gains in 2012 have been somewhat uneven, ranging from a low of 0.9% in the Middle Atlantic division to a high of 10.4% in the Mountain division.

It is important to note however, the general pattern that emerges: The areas with the largest recent percentage gains are those that rose the highest during the boom and fell the most during the bust. Those areas where the rise and fall was less extreme are recovering less lost ground and posting smaller percentage gains.

With prices rising and new home construction increasing, housing is finally providing the boost to economic growth that the sector typically provides at the end of a recession. This did not occur at the end of the Great Recession due to historic price declines, excess inventories and pent-up housing demand associated with a weak labor market.

Now that the virtuous circle of home building and economic growth is beginning to take hold, it is useful to keep in mind factors that could hold back the growth for housing. These negative factors include policy uncertainty (particularly relating to finance and taxes), lack of builder and land developer credit, and mortgage access for prospective home buyers.

Mortgage data from the Mortgage Bankers Association still do not indicate an expansion for home purchase debt, suggesting that home sales are still relying on investors and cash buyers to a greater degree than history would suggest is normal.

And lack of builder lots and home inventory is holding back new and existing home sales in some markets as pent-up housing demand increasingly unlocks with an improving labor market.

Start-up Advisor Cynthia Kocialski Chats with Women Connect Online

Entrepreneurship can be one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences you can do. But here?s the problem. Business competition is fierce. After all, it is competition. Less than 50% of startups survive 5 years, less than 1% of those seeking funding get funded, and most never get passed the product idea phase to even start a new business. How can you beat odds like that?

Cynthia Kocialski is the founder of three companies. In the past 15 years, she has been involved in numerous start-ups and has served on various advisory boards.?Cynthia has worked with established companies to bring start-up techniques and technologies to corporations desiring to process improvement and efficiency. The Interview

Q: As a Start-up Advisor tell me why we do not need a business plan?

Cynthia Kocialski: Most entrepreneurs treat the information in the business plan as the proven recipe for reaching their goals. The problem is most of the information is estimates, guesses, and just plain wishful thinking. How much of the information in your business plan is rock solid facts and data? Unless you have direct experience with the market, customers, and stakeholders, it?s not likely to be based upon actual experience. In which case, you are simply not ready yet to write a business plan. This is where the concept plan coupled with a strategy for business experiments comes into play. It creates the mindset within the entrepreneur that one needs to discover the right product and business model through direct experience before one can write that rock solid business plan.

Q: Tell me about the book.

Cynthia Kocialski: Your Start-Up Company as an Experiment eBook is how the scientific method can be applied when starting a new business ? a process and system for discovery you to determine what the new business really is. The first phase of the start-up should be to identify the assumptions and hypotheses about the product and business, devise business experiments to prove out the theories, and iterate until the entrepreneur has a good understanding of market and customers. Then it becomes possible to really build a viable business and if desired, attract investors.

Best of all when you purchase Your Startup Company as a Business Experiment Video Training, you?ll receive a dozen bonus gifts. Most of these gifts are EXCLUSIVE offers for you when you buy the video- i.e. are not available anywhere else.

New Business Training audios, transcripts, worksheets, whitepapers, ebook and an animation series to illustrate various scenarios and concepts.

Q: Tell us more about the video series that goes with the book.

Cynthia Kocialski: This Video Series has 2 hours of information that will change your perspective on the way you do business. The Videos Course provides the entrepreneur with a way to simplify what they need to focus on and in a way that is doable and manageable for them. Show the first time entrepreneurs HOW to think about creating the business and gives examples of how other entrepreneurs have tackled different hurdles.

Q: This course also includes a lecture on common mistakes. What can you tell us about this?

Cynthia Kocialski:

On a general level, most entrepreneurs focus too heavily on the product and the business that?s needed to surround the product is an afterthought ? even considered to be the easy and straightforward part of the equation for success by many entrepreneurs. That?s a big problem. Entrepreneurs need to focus on building business proof of concept, and that?s a simply equation of product plus customers plus revenue. Which brings me to a second point; entrepreneurs need to focus on revenue, how they entice customers to buy their new wonderful product or service. An example of a common mistake is entrepreneurs focus on the unhappy customers and try to make them satisfied customers. They don?t bother with the happy ones. It?s the old adage of don?t fix what?s already working. Instead, they should focus on their happiest ones. They should identify their best 5 or 6 customers, get to know them, build a relationship with them. Discover why they bought the product. Prioritize their desired changes ahead of others. Listen to their issues and problems with the product. In the early stages, start-ups are really looking for more customers just like the happiest ones.

Q: I have only so much time and money how do I know that this course will provide me with what I need?

Cynthia Kocialski: Most entrepreneurs have a technical skilled background. If they are starting a software company, they were trained as programmers. If they are starting an architectural firm, they were trained as architects. They focus on the end product for the skill, which is either developing the product or providing the service. Time and again, I find entrepreneurs who don?t want to spend money of the ?other? aspects of a business because they think the product is the biggest piece to success ? until it is almost too late. Yet, their start-up is a business. Investors only attribute 10% of success to the product, the rest is the business that surrounds the product. Anyone considering this course has figured out that the product isn?t everything and they need to know what the rest is.

Q: Where can I buy Your Startup Company as a Business Experiment Video Training Program and book?

Greenlee Gazette: Crazy Creationists: Dinosaurs Fled the Flood!

Last night I posted a piece about Mitt Romney' literal belief in his wacky religion. And, I noted that as an atheist, I find 'em all wacky, so I'm not so much singling Mormonism out, as I am saying it's just extra special goofy. But Mitt's not alone in his belief in unbelievable things.

Somehow, I got on the Creation Ministries International mailing list. And these folks are literal believers in the book of Genesis. Just FYI, that's the book that set me on the road to atheism, because it was taught to me at the same time as freshman Earth science. Guess which book won? Anyway, Genesis is chock full of ridiculous things that only the deeply deluded could believe are literal. From the "firmament" to the items set into it, from the cleanliness rules to the list of sacrificial requirements, from the conflicting dual creation stories to there being light before there was a light source? All of it is frankly unbelievable.

But nothing is more ridiculous than the flood story. Forget that there are (again) two conflicting Noah's Ark stories, and different numbers of animals in each. There are problems with the size of the boat. There are problems with the technology of building such a boat. There's the problem of how every kind of animal got to the middle east, and then re-dispersed themselves back to from whence they came. There are the uncomfortable facts about feeding and housing these animals for such an extended period, and what they would do about the waste. How did they keep the animals from eating each other, or the humans? How did they transport the bacteria, viruses, insects, arachnids and amoeba? How did the sealife and freshwater animals survive in the stirred up, seawater/rainwater/sediment-filled water? How did plantlife and fungi survive submerged for 100 days? And we're not even talking about where the water came from, and where it went! Why would an "all-loving" god murder his "children," no matter how disobedient they were?

On top of this is the question of dinosaurs. Why doesn't the Bible mention dinosaurs? Well, some try to parlay allusions of "dragons" and whatnot into dinosaurs, but it's a stretch. It actually makes the bible sound more like a bunch of fables to me. So, the question is, if man coexisted with dinosaurs, why do they get such scant coverage in the Bible? Why weren't they on the Ark? Did Noah take dinosaur eggs, rather than full-grown T-Rexes and Stegosauri? Why isn't it mentioned?

Obviously, it isn't mentioned, because the writer(s) of Genesis never heard of dinosaurs, and thus couldn't write about them. They didn't realize that the sun is the source of our light, so they could say it was created after light. They didn't know how clouds, the atmosphere, the orbits of the moon and planets, or stars in the universe worked, so they made crap up about the celestial bodies being placed in a bowl that separated the waters of heaven and earth. There are so many, countless, obvious problems with Genesis, an irreligious person like me just stands with my mouth agape. How can any adult take these fairy tales seriously?

And then I get my latest installment of further attempts at devising a narative that makes sense out of a book that really doesn't.? You know what I liken groups like Christian Ministries International to? I liken them to Rankin-Bass. You know, the studio that made such holiday classics as, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Year Without a Santa Claus. In those holiday specials, they took all of the implausibilities in the Santa Claus story, and explained them in such a way as to keep kids believing it just a little while longer. And as kids, we wanted to believe. That's all this foolishness is.

If you are interested (and I hope it's only for amusement value), you can find this group here: Christian Ministries International.

Jelly Bean build for the Droid RAZR HD leaks out

Android Central

When the Droid RAZR HD was announced, Motorola was quick to note the Android 4.0 powered device would indeed be getting an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by the end of the year. One could conclude from that that Motorola has been doing some testing of the update in an effort to get it ready by that time but alas, owners are still waiting. While we wait though, the more adventurous out there may want to check out a new Jelly Bean leak that has now popped up.

Labeled as "9.1.39Xt926.verizon.en.us" this release is noted to be non-official and carries with it the typical slew of warnings, like the fact that if you load it - you may end up stuck on this build for a while and it's potentially full of bugs.

You won't have to be rooted to load it up but you should be stock, it can be side-loaded as well but if you're looking to keep the root access you currently have you'll need to back up root using OTA Root keeper. Again, not for everyone to take for a spin but if you're interested, you can hit the source link below to learn more and grab the downloads.
