Scientist discovers plate tectonics on Mars

ScienceDaily (Aug. 9, 2012) ? For years, many scientists had thought that plate tectonics existed nowhere in our solar system but on Earth. Now, a UCLA scientist has discovered that the geological phenomenon, which involves the movement of huge crustal plates beneath a planet's surface, also exists on Mars.

"Mars is at a primitive stage of plate tectonics. It gives us a glimpse of how the early Earth may have looked and may help us understand how plate tectonics began on Earth," said An Yin, a UCLA professor of Earth and space sciences and the sole author of the new research.

Yin made the discovery during his analysis of satellite images from a NASA spacecraft known as THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) and from the HIRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. He analyzed about 100 satellite images -- approximately a dozen were revealing of plate tectonics.

Yin has conducted geologic research in the Himalayas and Tibet, where two of Earth's seven major plates divide.

"When I studied the satellite images from Mars, many of the features looked very much like fault systems I have seen in the Himalayas and Tibet, and in California as well, including the geomorphology," said Yin, a planetary geologist.

For example, he saw a very smooth, flat side of a canyon wall, which can be generated only by a fault, and a steep cliff, comparable to cliffs in California's Death Valley, which also are generated by a fault. Mars has a linear volcanic zone, which Yin said is a typical product of plate tectonics.

"You don't see these features anywhere else on other planets in our solar system, other than Earth and Mars," said Yin, whose research is featured as the cover story in the August issue of the journal Lithosphere.

The surface of Mars contains the longest and deepest system of canyons in our solar system, known as Valles Marineris (Latin for Mariner Valleys and named for the Mariner 9 Mars orbiter of 1971-72, which discovered it). It is nearly 2,500 miles long -- about nine times longer than Earth's Grand Canyon. Scientists have wondered for four decades how it formed. Was it a big crack in Mars' shell that opened up?

"In the beginning, I did not expect plate tectonics, but the more I studied it, the more I realized Mars is so different from what other scientists anticipated," Yin said. "I saw that the idea that it is just a big crack that opened up is incorrect. It is really a plate boundary, with horizontal motion. That is kind of shocking, but the evidence is quite clear.

"The shell is broken and is moving horizontally over a long distance. It is very similar to the Earth's Dead Sea fault system, which has also opened up and is moving horizontally."

The two plates divided by Mars' Valles Marineris have moved approximately 93 miles horizontally relative to each other, Yin said. California's San Andreas Fault, which is over the intersection of two plates, has moved about twice as much -- but Earth is about twice the size of Mars, so Yin said they are comparable.

Yin, whose research is partly funded by the National Science Foundation, calls the two plates on Mars the Valles Marineris North and the Valles Marineris South.

"Earth has a very broken 'egg shell,' so its surface has many plates; Mars' is slightly broken and may be on the way to becoming very broken, except its pace is very slow due to its small size and, thus, less thermal energy to drive it," Yin said. "This may be the reason Mars has fewer plates than on Earth."

Mars has landslides, and Yin said a fault is shifting the landslides, moving them from their source.

Does Yin think there are Mars-quakes?

"I think so," he said. "I think the fault is probably still active, but not every day. It wakes up every once in a while, over a very long duration -- perhaps every million years or more."

Yin is very confident in his findings, but mysteries remain, he said, including how far beneath the surface the plates are located.

"I don't quite understand why the plates are moving with such a large magnitude or what the rate of movement is; maybe Mars has a different form of plate tectonics," Yin said. "The rate is much slower than on Earth."

Earth has a broken shell with seven major plates; pieces of the shell move, and one plate may move over another. Yin is doubtful that Mars has more than two plates.

"We have been able to identify only the two plates," he said. "For the other areas on Mars, I think the chances are very, very small. I don't see any other major crack."

Did the movement of Valles Marineris North and Valles Marineris South create the enormous canyons on Mars? What led to the creation of plate tectonics on Earth?

Yin, who will continue to study plate tectonics on Mars, will answer those questions in a follow-up paper that he also plans to publish in the journal Lithosphere.

Handheld cutting tool makes anyone a master carpenter

There?s hope yet for the fat-fingered set who want to try their hands at precision craftsmanship thanks to a new tool that combines manual and automatic positioning to cut things according to a digital plan.

This could be handy, for example, if you want to make wooden drink coasters in the shape of the United States ? jagged coastlines and all ? for an upcoming presidential debate viewing party.

To do so, just put the tool down on a piece of wood and follow an on-screen guide to move it roughly in the shape of the country. The tool will automatically adjust its cutter to correct your positioning error, explains the Massachusetts Institute of Technology team that created the tool.

Before actually cutting, you have to first move the tool over the piece of wood so that an on-board camera can make a 2-D map of it. Stickers on the surface will help the tool keep track of where it is if there are no other distinctive markings.

Then, load your desired design ? that map of the United States ? onto a computer, which pairs it with the 2-D map of the material about to be cut.?

Once cutting, the system automatically compares all the new images it receives from its camera with the digital map, allowing it to precisely follow the digital plan.

Alec Rivers, a Ph.D. student in computer science and artificial intelligence at MIT, designed the position-correcting tool to make low-cost precision manufacturing widely available.

Most precision cutting tools are large, fully automatic tabletop machines that can only cut shapes that are smaller than themselves. They are also rather expensive ? about $20,000 for a 5 foot-by-8 foot ShopBot mill, the team notes in a paper to be presented?this week at the?Siggraph 2012 conference in Los Angeles.

DETROIT (AP) ? The Tigers are a half-game out of first place, and they know who to thank.

Miguel Cabrera homered for the third straight game and drove in three runs, and Detroit held off the New York Yankees 6-5 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory.

"I've never seen anything like him," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I've been in this game for 50 years, and I've never seen opposite-field power like Miguel Cabrera. Never. Anybody."

New York scored twice off closer Jose Valverde in the ninth inning and had runners at second and third when Curtis Granderson popped up for the final out. The AL East leaders have lost 12 of 18.

Cabrera is making a run at the AL MVP award, hitting .333 since the All-Star break with 11 homers and 24 RBIs in 24 games. Andy Dirks added three hits and two RBIs for the Tigers, who have won 16 of 17 at home for the first time since 1919.

Detroit moved within a half-game of first-place Chicago in the AL Central.

"We're doing exactly what we want to do," catcher Alex Avila said. "We can taste the playoffs, and we want them."

Rick Porcello (9-6) picked up the win, allowing three runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

Porcello is 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his last four home starts against the Yankees. Three relievers finished, with Valverde staggering to his 22nd save in 26 tries.

Ichiro Suzuki hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth and Russell Martin followed with a run-scoring double to left. Suzuki was held at third, however, and Granderson popped out to first.

"It was there, but I popped it up, so I obviously wasn't even close to it," Granderson said. "It's just one loss, and I know it doesn't matter if we lose that way or 10-0, but it was frustrating."

Phil Hughes (11-9) struggled after dominating the Tigers the previous time he faced them. After tossing a four-hitter on June 3, he lasted just 4 1-3 innings this time, giving up four runs and eight hits.

The game was scoreless until Eric Chavez's two-run homer for the Yankees in the fourth. Chavez had three hits against Justin Verlander on Monday.

Cabrera made it 2-1 with a line drive into the left-field stands in the bottom of the inning. The homer was his 19th at Comerica Park, tying the stadium record he set in 2008 and matched in 2009. Jhonny Peralta made it 2-all with a two-out double off Hughes.

"Nothing Miggy does surprises me anymore," Avila said. "I'll only be surprised if he's not the MVP. He's unbelievable."

Brennan Boesch didn't drive in a run, but he singled on a nine-pitch at-bat in the second inning and again on a 12-pitch at-bat in the fourth ? something that Hughes acknowledged fatigued him.

"I was pretty tired myself ? that was like doing a full round of batting practice in one at-bat," Boesch said. "I think every hitter knows that if you have lengthy at-bats, it helps the team, because a pitcher's whole job is to have quick innings. He was making good pitches, but I kept fouling them off."

Leyland agreed, especially when it came to Boesch's fourth-inning hit that set up Peralta's tying double.

"I think we won the game with that at-bat," the manager said. "I don't know how many pitches it was, but it got Hughes' pitch count from nothing to something, and that was the key to the game."

Cabrera chased Hughes with a two-run double in the fifth, and Andy Dirks' run-scoring double gave the Tigers a three-run lead in the next inning.

"He's one of the best hitters in the game, and you never want to let him beat you," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Cabrera. "The problem is that if you pitch around him, the next guy (Prince Fielder) is pretty good, too. That's the best 3-4 combination in the game."

Suzuki's RBI double pulled the Yankees to 5-3, but Dirks restored the three-run cushion with an RBI single in the eighth.

NOTES: Derek Jeter's fourth-inning single was his first hit against Porcello in 14 career at-bats. ... Detroit's batting practice was televised, and Cabrera and Prince Fielder put on a show for the viewers. Cabrera hit a homer off the Al Kaline statue above the stands in right-center, while Fielder hit a ball into the Wildcat Bleachers on the second deck in left. Neither location has ever been reached during a game. ... The game was delayed briefly after Chavez hit reliever Cody Eppley in the head with a throw from third. Eppley was in the process of catching a toss from the plate umpire and didn't see Chavez's throw. He was checked by the Yankees' training staff, but laughed it off.

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? Egypt deployed helicopter gunships to the Sinai Peninsula on Monday to hunt for the militants who killed 16 soldiers at a checkpoint along the border with Israel, according to security and military officials. Israel meanwhile stepped up pressure on Egypt to clamp down on the lawless border zone.

The officials said two attack helicopters had been sent and more were expected to arrive in the border town of El-Arish as Egyptian security forces prepared to sweep the region, which has experienced a surge of violence since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak's regime last year.

Suspected Islamists attacked the checkpoint on Sunday, killing the soldiers before stealing two of their vehicles and bursting through a security fence into Israel. Israeli officials say the attack was quickly spotted, hit with an airstrike, and at least eight militants were killed.

Egypt and Israel say both Islamist militants from the Sinai and Palestinian allies from the neighboring Gaza Strip are active in the northern Sinai, attacking both Egyptian security forces and staging raids across the border into Israel. This attack was one of the deadliest in years.

The unrest in the Sinai poses a daunting challenge to Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who since coming to office a little more than a month ago has warmed up to Gaza's Hamas rulers. Hamas officials have condemned the killing of the Egyptian soldiers, but Morsi may still come under pressure to back down from plans to end Egypt's cooperation with the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.

He vowed on Sunday night to make the killers pay for their crime and to restore security to Sinai, home to several of the most popular Red Sea resorts in Egypt. On Monday, he declared three days of mourning for the victims, according to state television.

The Sinai border has been largely quiet for most of the three decades since Israel and Egypt signed a peace agreement, although security forces have for years combated a low-level insurgency in El-Arish and nearby areas. The 1979 treaty restricts the number of troops and the type of weapons Egypt can deploy there.

The peninsula has experienced a security vacuum since Mubarak's overthrow in February 2011, and both cross-border and other insurgent attacks have increased. Israel has agreed in the past to Egypt sending reinforcements to bolster its forces there, but the Egyptian officials did not say whether Israel had signed off on the helicopter deployment.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday paid an unannounced visit to the site where the militants broke through, praising Israeli security forces for their swift and effective response and expressing regret for the loss of the Egyptian lives.

"Israel and Egypt have a shared interest in maintaining a quiet border," Netanyahu said. "But when talking about the security of Israeli citizens, Israel must and will rely only on itself," he added.

Other Israeli officials gave more details of the attack and their response.

Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai told Army Radio that after killing the soldiers, the militants seized a truck and an armored car, then blew up one of the vehicles to punch a hole through a security fence to enter Israel. He said the gunmen were armed with explosive devices, submachine guns and grenades.

He said that Israeli intelligence services had reports of impending infiltration and sent aircraft to strike as the militants broke through. "We were prepared for it, so there was a hit," he said. He said the military "averted a major attack on southern Israel."

In a video clip released by the military, Israeli military chief Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz said the incident was over within 15 minutes on the Israeli side. Defense Minister Ehud Barak told parliament that eight militants were killed by Israeli forces who struck from the air, as well as with tanks and artillery.

The attack was the third cross-border infiltration since Mubarak's overthrow. In one, in August 2011, eight Israelis were killed. Israel is building a fence along the border to block militants as well as illegal African migrants, but also wants Egypt to crack down harder on the border region.

"We hope this will be a fitting wakeup call for the Egyptians to take things in hand on their side more forcefully," Barak told parliament's foreign affairs and defense committee on Monday.

Egypt-Israel relations have always been cool but since Mubarak was overthrown and Islamists rose to power, Israeli officials have expressed concern that ties would further deteriorate. Israel is particularly concerned that Egypt will ease restrictions on entering and leaving the Gaza Strip.

Sunday's attack took place around sunset near the Egyptian border town of Rafah, when the troops at the checkpoint were having the traditional meal at the end of the daily fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Immediately after, Egypt shut the Rafah crossing with Gaza, an ominous sign for the Palestinian territory's 1.6 million people. Israel bars Gazans from entering Israel, so the Rafah crossing ? the only exit from the tiny coastal territory not under direct Israeli control ? is their sole gateway to the outside world.

Gaza officials disowned the attack but gave mixed signals over whether residents of the territory may have carried it out.

Gaza's deputy prime minister, Mohammed Awad of the ruling Hamas movement, said militants from the territory were "not involved in this awful crime." But a leading Hamas member, Mohammed Zahar, undercut that denial, telling Al-Jazeera TV that he asked Egypt to provide the names of possible suspects from Gaza so that "we will immediately bring them to justice."

The attack could harm Hamas' efforts to persuade Morsi to ease restrictions at the crossing. Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and had hoped that Morsi, a fellow member of the region-wide movement, would be sympathetic to its requests. But he has moved cautiously, in part because of concerns about an influx of militants from Gaza.
