Kidnapped Red Cross worker freed in Yemen

GENEVA (AP) ? The international Red Cross says a French staff member kidnapped in Yemen almost three months ago has been freed.

A spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross says 28-year-old Benjamin Malbrancke was handed over by a group called Ansar al-Shari'a in Shabwa on Friday.

Hicham Hassan told The Associated Press on Saturday that it is still unclear who was behind the kidnapping.

Malbrancke was snatched April 21 in the western coastal province of Hudayda while traveling to a local airport in an ICRC-marked vehicle.

Foreigners have been targeted repeatedly for kidnapping by tribal groups in Yemen. An offshoot of the al-Qaida terror group also operates in the country.

The recent hack of Yahoo Voice exposed hundreds of thousands of passwords (you can enter your email here to see if yours was one of them), and security buffs immediately started digging into the data. What they found is the same thing they've always found: thousands of people using the same incredibly predictable passwords. Were you one of them? No time like the present to learn how to create a secure and memorable password.

First, a quick visualization of the shoddy password-making, courtesy of Sophos Security:

A hacker would naturally try these frequently?occurring passwords and fragments before any others; if you have "123456" or "QWERTY" as your password, it's almost as bad as having no password at all. Similarly, public information like your name, birthday, and the like would also be easy pickings.

On the other hand, it's difficult to remember a strong password like "58aw7gk4ek91_4*02" ? so how can you strike a balance?

One thing you can do is use a password management program (there are several to choose from depending on your platform) that will create, save,?and automatically input passwords to sites and services, and all you have to do is remember one master password. This will help prevent other accounts from being hacked if one is compromised. But you'll still need a good, strong password to access the rest.

Picking a word and a couple numbers isn't enough. You have to throw a few tricks in there. Say your favorite book is "A Tale of Two Cities."?Don't pick "dickens456" for your password. How about "@ToTC1859Iwtb0t"? The first letter of each word in the title, the year it came out, and the first letter of the first words in the book ("It was the best of times..."), enhanced?with some simple substitutions (@ for A, 0 for o, etc).

Basically, anything that can reduce something you know and can remember to a jumble of letters (upper- and lower-case), numbers and symbols will make a stronger password than just a random word and number.?It's not quite as good as a machine-generated, totally random password, but you won't have to spend an hour memorizing it, either.

"LIKE being knocked over by a wave." That is how Peter Higgs describes the euphoria following last week's announcement that a particle resembling the one bearing his name had been discovered at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. Those in attendance reacted more like victorious football supporters than delegates at a sober scientific seminar.

The party has been a long time coming. When Higgs and others first conceived of the idea of a field that gives rise to mass, almost half a century ago, they could not have expected evidence for their theory to eventually come from an international collaboration of thousands of people operating the most complex machine ever built.

What is there to celebrate, though? In some ways, the most honest answer is: we're not quite sure yet. Most of the possibilities that were on the table when the LHC first powered up are still on the table. But there are ample grounds for jubilation, whatever the new particle turns out to be.

It could be that CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland, has found exactly what was predicted - the boson completing the standard model of particle physics. That would be an intellectual triumph; a tribute to the power of the human mind - or rather, many minds working through the scientific method - to decipher the cosmos.

Satisfying though that might be for one generation of theorists, it would be frustrating for the next - offering few clues about how to address the universe's many remaining mysteries. Physicists just embarking on their careers, and those who may be inspired to join them, are hoping that the new particle's puzzling features will grow more persistent, rather than vanishing, as results are gathered over the next few months (see "Beyond Higgs: Deviant decays hint at exotic physics").

That would be even more worthy of celebration than confirmation of the standard model. Surprises are the greatest gift that nature can offer science. They open up new vistas and fresh avenues for exploration.

"In one sense, it is the end of the road," says Higgs. "But in another, it's the beginning of where machines like the LHC go next." Proposals are already being put forward for the next generation of colliders (see "Let's build a Higgs factory - on the cheap"). Tellingly, there is considerable emphasis on cost. Big physics is expensive, and cheaper options may prove tempting during times of enforced austerity. Certainly, the high profile of Italian participants at CERN does not seem to have prompted their hard-pressed government to reconsider deep funding cuts for the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics.

And the desolate tunnels of the Superconducting Super Collider under Waxahachie, Texas - which could have anticipated CERN's discovery by a decade or more - should be a sobering reminder that politicians are often more concerned with addressing short-term practicalities than fostering long-term possibilities.

In the current cash-strapped climate, the case for big physics will be tougher to make than ever. But the excitement provoked by CERN's discovery - for millions outside the conference room, as well as those within it - shows that the basic human urge to push back the boundaries of knowledge still thrives. And that is worth celebrating in itself.

An Ounce of Prevention?Using an Eldercare Attorney is a Smart ...

Well intentioned people often make well intentioned mistakes.? This axiom is especially true when dealing with an elderly family member?s finances and legal matters.? You have all heard the expression ?a little knowledge is a dangerous thing?? this is certainly true when listening to your neighbor or your brother-in-law speak about Medicaid eligibility and spend down allowances. Not going to a professional is one of the most costly mistakes one can make.? With the cost of nursing homes skyrocketing to as much as $14,000 a month, professional guidance is worth its weight in gold.?

An eldercare attorney recently told me that five years ago his practice primarily consisted of assisting families plan for Medicaid and making sure they had the proper medical power of attorney, living wills, trusts and wills prepared. Now, he spends most of this time trying to undo mistakes that people unwittingly made.?

One common mistake is divestiture of assets.? There is a big difference between gifting to your children and grandchildren under the IRS guidelines, and the gifting regulations under Medicaid. Below are the IRS guidelines taken directly from their web-site.

How many annual exclusions are available?
The annual exclusion applies to gifts to each done. In other words, if you give each of your children $11,000 in 2002-2005, $12,000 in 2006-2008, and $13,000 on or after January 1, 2009, the annual exclusion applies to each gift.

What if my spouse and I want to give away property that we own together?
You are each entitled to the annual exclusion amount on the gift. Together, you can give $22,000 to each donee (2002-2005) or $24,000 (2006-2008), $26,000 (effective on or after January 1, 2009).?

Medicaid, however views these gifts differently.? If any transfer of assets, or gifts, occurs within 5 years of applying for Medicaid, those monies are subject to a penalty. Medicaid doesn?t care that the money was used for college tuition or to help a family member purchase a home.? If the money came out, it must be returned, even if it?s not readily available.

'Xperia Unleashed' gets underway as Sony dishes out host of prizes

Sony is adding a little spice to the launch of its latest products by embarking on a brand new campaign this week ? and you could win some of the prizes on offer right here on ITProPortal.

The ?Xperia Unleashed? campaign will see thousands of ?Xperiabots? (the robots featuring on Sony?s TV adverts) let loose around London and Manchester. The robots will be depicted escaping from Sony Xperia devices and customers can win a host of prizes by ?capturing? them ? i.e. uploading the codes shown on the bots to the Sony Facebook page.

Urban renewal or rich enclave in east London?

The organisers of the London Olympics hope their mammoth ?9.3 billion investment will regenerate east London, but critics fear it will only create an island of prosperity amid run-down neighbourhoods.

The London Legacy Development Corporation, which is responsible for the area's post-Games legacy, argues that the Games, with a budget equivalent to $14.5 billion or 11.6 billion euros, have already speeded up the regeneration of a once polluted site.

"There was a dirty hole in the Lee Valley and it's become a biodiversity spot," said the agency's Chief of Design Kathryn Firth.

But critics of the development fear that what has actually been created is a rich enclave like Canary Wharf, the steel and glass district of banks and apartments a short distance from the Olympic Park.

"A new part of the city has been grafted on, rather than giving priority to seeking to improve the living conditions of the people who live there," said Manuel Appert, a geographer who specialises in urban London.

Just as in Canary Wharf, "you go from the very richest on one side of the street to the very poorest on the other", he argues.

The area where the stadiums are located, Stratford, was very poor, but it was home to many residents and businesses before the bulldozers moved in.

Thousands of inhabitants and more than 200 companies employing 5,000 people were displaced in order to build the Olympic Park, including a smoked salmon factory which received new, larger premises paid for from the budget.

The development agency has promised thousands of new homes, a huge green space, three miles (five kilometres) of trails along the River Lee, schools, nurseries and other public facilities.

It is hoped a new business centre will provide much-needed jobs for the borough of Newham, an ethnically mixed area which has an employment rate of just 56 percent.

Stratford resident Farhat Monin, 25, believes the Games will boost prospects for the majority of locals, providing that businesses favour Newham inhabitants when hiring new staff.

"It's good that people get to know the area better through the Olympic Games," she said. "The area is changing, it's being taken care of."

The new landscape is futuristic, with trains and subways leading to a huge railway station, which has direct underground access to the new Westfield shopping centre, the largest in Europe.

But if you cross a footbridge spanning the railway lines you reach the "old" part of Stratford, where a much smaller and older shopping mall is struggling to survive the competition from Westfield.

In the high street, the furniture store has closed. The manager of the bedding shop next door, Mehmet Stewart, acknowledges that "Westfield is definitely taking customers" but is optimistic. "People will return, our prices are more reasonable," he said.

Atif Khan, who manages a mobile phone shop, has experienced a "20 to 25 percent decline in sales", and fears that the residents of the area will be priced out once the Olympics finish.

"The city looks nicer, safer, and cleaner," he said. "I'd like to live here, but housing is more expensive."

The borough of Newham is in dire need of affordable housing with 36,000 people on waiting lists.

The transformation of the Olympic Village, which will house 2,800 athletes during the Games, into 1,379 "affordable" homes should help alleviate the problem.

But only 25 percent of those will be available for social housing, according to Manuel Appert.

One half was sold to Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, which is expected to rent out its properties at market prices.

The other half was sold to housing associations, who had to limit the amount dedicated to social housing in order to obtain bank loans.

After the Games, the Village will be converted into a mini-city complete with an education complex, shops and public squares.

"There will be around 11,000 homes -- so that's maybe 40,000 people -- living there 20 years from now," said Richard Burdett, professor of urbanism at the London School of Economics.

For Burdett, the true post-Games test "is if it feels like a normal piece of city -- and I think that's the ambition of the project".
